Rookie of the Year?

20 Jun 2008

CANNES: Sir Anthony O'Reilly is not so sure he deserves this year's Cannes accolade of Media Person of the Year.

O'Reilly, chief executive of International News & Media (INM), told the Lions Daily News today (20 June) that having been CEO of INM for only eight years, perhaps he didn't deserve the title.

"So perhaps I should be picking up a Rookie of the Year award," he said.

"Given that previous winners such as Arnaud Lagardere, Jean-Claude Decaux and Sumner Redstone are from considerably larger countries than Ireland, this award is very special," he added.

O'Reilly said he was impressed by the creative energy and "controlled optimism" of the advertising festival, but acknowledged print has to "up its game" to better compete for people's attention.

"But I also have no doubt that a newspaper done well is the ultimate browser, because you can find in 30 minutes what it would take you three or four hours to find on the internet."
