19 Jun 2008
CANNES: Australia scored an impressive 19 shortlisted entries in the Film Lions competition, while New Zealand went through with only four entries.
Clemenger BBDO Melbourne and Leo Burnett Sydney each have three entries in contention, while Saatchi & Saatchi and Grey Melbourne scored two each, with DDB Melbourne, DDB Sydney, BMF, George Patterson Y&R Melbourne, Whybin TBWA\ Melbourne, JWT Sydney, Colman Rasic Carrasco, Razor Junior Sydney and cumminsnitro Melbourne facing one chance each at a Lion.
New Zealand's four shortlisted entries are from two agencies: DDB Auckland and Clemenger BBDO Wellington.
Australia submitted 150 entries in the Film Lions, a big jump from last year's 92, but on par with 2006's 142 entries. New Zealand made 43 submissions, up from last year's 32 but significantly down on the heyday of 2004, with 65 entries.
Aussie will be hoping to do better than last year's win of only two Film Lions. In 2006, Oz's Film gongs tally was a more impressive seven. New Zealand won four Film Lions last year, and two in 2006.
The Film Lions winners will be announced on Saturday night (21 June) Cannes time, on the same night the Titanium & Integrated Lions are awarded, as well as Agency of the Year, Network of the Year and the Palme d'Or.
